Michael Pullen for Congress Newsletter, Week of Feb. 27, 2018

This week, on Thursday, Congressman Andy Harris will be holding a town hall at Joppa, ostensibly to talk about immigration. Now, having been to a couple of Harris Town Halls, this is what I expect will happen:

First, Harris will come on stage late. He will begin with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. He’ll make an opening statement, complete with a PowerPoint slide show that will consume half of the allotted time for him to be on stage. He will then read some questions off cards. I don’t know where he will have gotten the questions from, but he will not take open questions from the audience. Harris will then conclude his presentation with a rambling thank you for all the people who have kept us safe for this event, including all the police and first responders he can think of. I will be at this town hall. These are the questions I would like to ask Harris, but I expect that he will not answer anything like this.

  1. Why is it appropriate to defund Maryland’s flagship university and override the clear will of Maryland voters?

A bit of background. Harris introduced House Resolution 1342 which would strip federal research money to schools that choose not to actively police the documentation status of their students. This bill would pointlessly make it harder for undocumented students to get a college education and contribute fully to our country's economy.
  2. How does it benefit our country to remove Dreamers, who, countless studies have shown, work hard, pay their taxes, commit crimes at lower rates than US citizens, and above all, WANT to become US citizens?
  3. Why are you opposed to family reunification?
  4. President Trump’s travel bans targeted travelers from largely-Muslim countries that have not been tied, in any way, to a terrorist attacks here the US. Those countries that have been linked to terrorist attacks were specifically exempted from the travel ban. Do you still think a travel ban makes any sense?
  5. If yes, are you aware that the president’s aborted travel bans denied entry to the US of Afghani and Iraqi nationals who acted as guides and translators to our armed forces fighting in those countries? These heroes risked their, and their families, lives to help us. Our promise to them was that we would take care of them and keep them safe. Do you believe America should go back on her word?

I will be going, and I will try to ask these questions. If you have any questions you would like me to ask, please let me know. Or better yet, come to the Town Hall yourself. It begins at 6:30, Thursday, March 1st, at the Joppa – Magnolia Fire Hall at 1403 Old Mountain Road South, Joppa, 21805.

119 Days to the June 26 Primary

First Lady Melania Trump will soon welcome her parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, to America as newly minted U.S. citizens. Congratulations are the order of the day.

This is a wonderful example of family reunification, which has been a bedrock principle for America’s immigrants (that is to say, all of us), since America’s founding, by immigrants. Except that President Trump and Andy Harris cynically attempt to re-frame and exploit this as “chain migration” to hundreds of thousands of Americans who do not happen to be in the president’s immediate family circle.

The hypocrisy is staggering. It will continue as long as Republicans like Andy Harris remain in power. I support immigrants who want to participate in the Promise of America and who, through their hard work and love of this nation, will make America truly great by welcoming immigrants to America, as we always have, and giving them a chance for a new life.

Voters in the 1st District have the chance to send Andy Harris packing. I am up to the challenge, but I need your help. It costs a lot to take on a sitting U.S. Congressman. Please join us. Donate to my campaign. Call us to get involved. Thanks for your support!

omorrow, February 28th, I will be at the Fight for $15 rally for a $15 Minimum Wage at the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy at 114 South Washington Street, Suite 101, Easton. The party starts at 6:15pm. I love that touch: 6:15.

On Thursday, March 1st, I will be in Joppa for the Harris Town Hall. Harris is scheduled to take the stage at 6:30, but it would be best to get their earlier. The Joppa Magnolia Fire Hall is at 1403 Old Mountain Road South, Joppa, 21805.

On Saturday, March 3rd, come join me at the Caroline County Democratic Club breakfast at the American Legion appropriately located at 9238 Legion Rd, Denton, MD 21629. Breakfast begins at 9am. Saturday afternoon brings us to Pocomoke to the home of Jackie and Kate Gordon. All are invited, you can RSVP to the number on the invitation below. I’d love to know what’s on your mind. Please come.

And looking ahead… The Queen Anne’s County Democratic Club is hosting a Meet the Candidate Night on Wednesday, March 7th, from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Centreville Public Library, 200 Liberty Street. I will be on-stage with Allison Galbraith and Jesse Colvin, two other Democrats who are bringing a welcome energy to this race.

My campaign is built upon meeting the residents of the 1st District. I need to know what you think and how I can best serve you as your congressman. I am doing this primarily by conducting door – door canvasses throughout the District. We’ve been primarily going out on Saturdays, and I know everyone’s weekends are precious. But soon, as it gets lighter, we’ll be able to go out midweek. I need volunteers who are willing to go out and survey the District. We’ll send you out with a partner (it’s more fun that way) and walking list with the name and address for every person we want to meet. I can assure you that you’ll have a good time – we are targeting Democrats in the runup to the June 26th Primary. Most of the folks you will talk to desperately want to see Andy Harris gone.

If you would rather not give up an entire Saturday afternoon, but can offer an hour or two a week, we now have virtual phone banking where you can call the same people from the comfort of your own home. Making calls to strangers can be off-putting – you would not believe how many calls I have to make each day trying to raise funds and awareness for taking on a sitting Congressman – but again, the calls you make will be to friendly folks.

If you would like to get involved with either of these projects, please call my field director, Justin Butler, directly at: (410) 829 – 6435.

Michael canvassing in Cockeysville. It was a lovely day, and as always, we learned a lot from 1st District residents. We will be canvassing every weekend from now until the June 26th primary. If you have some spare time, please join us!

As you might have guessed, I got several responses from last week’s newsletter concerning gun violence. This short, but pointed, letter from Kurt O. was typical:

Please explain how the “gun” fired all by itself.

I will try to be equally brief: Obviously, the gun didn't fire itself. It was Nicky Cruz who did the shooting. But by the same token, Cruz chose to bring an AR-15 to school, and not a knife or crossbow. I am pretty sure that if he had brought a knife, or acid, as NRA President LaPierre opined, none of us would have even heard of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I think the sheer lethality of weapons like the AR–15 make them too dangerous to be readily accessible. Nicky Cruz, after the fact, will be fully punished by the law. I want to stop these tragedies, before the fact.

Would you consider putting up a Pullen For Us yard sign?  I’m taking a head count; signs won’t be available for another couple of months.
Or if you can you get the word out now, I do have bumper stickers available now.  Believe me, I will get it out to you immediately.
