Talbot Rising endorses Michael Pullen for Congress

EASTON, MD – Talbot Rising, a progressive, nonpartisan grassroots organization for the Eastern Shore, has announced that it is endorsing Democratic candidate Michael Pullen for the First Congressional District in Maryland to replace the incumbent, Rep. Andy Harris.

The organization, which has more than 500 members, said that Pullen will provide the kind of representation in Congress for the First District and Eastern Shore that has been missing in action for too long. We can count on the fact that he will champion the interests of the people in this district -- not special interests, donors, or large corporations.

Frederick Douglass and Immigration

Frederick Douglass and Immigration

This year, Maryland is proud to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass, born in Talbot County on the shores of the Tuckahoe River in 1818.

We all know his story, rising from a slave to become a great advocate for social and racial justice. His was an epic life of struggle. His success, hard-won and against the odds, has inspired Americans thru every generation. His story is our story, his struggle is our struggle, his inspiration is ours today.

But the questions of his day are still with us. America was arguing about immigration then, and we still are. Then, it was the Chinese. He correctly understood that immigration, at its core, involves questions of race, religion, ethnicity, and our own national identity.

He spoke with dignity and power for equal opportunity for people of all races, religions, and backgrounds. He believed strongly then, as I do now, that America should continue to be a welcoming nation for immigrants.
